Post #1 - A Guide to Savannah Soil

This month-by-month guide provides actionable steps to keep your soil healthy throughout the year so your landscape is ready for every season. Click left to talk dirty with Mr. Green Grass!

January – Start with a Soil Check

The new year is perfect for taking an annual soil sample and sending it for analysis. This will tell you the pH and nutrient levels, which guide fertilization and plant care decisions. Consult with a professional about areas that need extra help, like low nitrogen spots or compacted patches, so you can target your treatments throughout the year.

February – Prepping for Spring Growth

Adjust soil pH with sulfur or lime as recommended by your landscape professional. This

ensures nutrients are available as plants emerge in spring. Apply pre-emergent weed control to stop unwanted weeds from germinating, giving your lawn and flower beds a head start for the season.

Late March/Early April – Fertilization and Insect Management

Apply fertilizer according to your soil analysis to support vigorous spring growth. At the same time, use a targeted insecticide treatment to protect roots and young plants from pests that can damage them before you even notice. Together, these steps set your garden up for a strong growing season.

May – Monitor and Treat Post-Emergent Weeds

By May, some weeds may appear despite earlier prevention. Treat post-emergent weeds

promptly. Removing them now reduces competition for nutrients, sunlight, and water, giving your lawn and flower beds the best chance to thrive.

June – Second Round of Fertilizer and Pest Control

Apply a second round of fertilizer based on your soil test recommendations to maintain nutrient

levels during peak growth. Conduct a second insecticide treatment to protect against pests.

July/August – Fungus and Disease Prevention

Savannah’s hot, humid summers can encourage fungal diseases. Apply fungicide preventatively

to keep lawns and landscape plants healthy. Maintaining soil health during these months is especially

important to aid plants in resisting heat and disease.

August/September Late Summer Maintenance

Apply a final insecticide treatment to control persistent pests, and treat any post-emergent

weeds that popped up despite earlier efforts. This ensures your soil continues to support strong growth.

October – Preparing for Winter

Apply pre-emergent weed control to prevent winter weeds from taking hold. Inspect your lawn

and beds for areas that may need mulching to maintain soil structure over the dormant season.

November – Spot Treatments and Observation

Some weeds may persist into late fall. Spot treat post-emergent weeds as necessary, and

continue monitoring soil and plant health. Making small adjustments now helps your garden

enter winter strong and resilient.
